When I wrote my book Adjusting to Life in the USA, I wanted to share tips and guidance to help newcomers feel at home. After publishing the book, I realized that much of what I wrote fits into one practical framework. I now call this the ADJUST™ Method.
The ADJUST™ Method is practical and easy to remember. Each letter of the word ADJUST stands for one important step for building a strong life in a new country.
A = Adaptability
Be open to new things. Try not to compare everything to your home country. Instead, ask yourself, “What can I learn here?” When you stay curious, you make more friends and feel less stressed.
Try this: Taste a food you have never tried before or ask a neighbor about a local holiday.
D = Development
Keep learning. The most important skill is language. Even learning three new words each day makes a difference. Also, look for chances to grow in your job, school, or hobbies.
Try this: Write down new English words in a notebook and practice them with someone you trust.
J = Joining Community
Do not be alone. Life is easier when you have people around you. Join a group, visit the library, attend an event, or volunteer. Every new connection helps.
Try this: Introduce yourself to one new person this week.
U = Understanding Culture
You do not need to give up your culture. You can keep your traditions and also learn about American values. Both can be part of who you are.
Try this: Celebrate your own holiday at home and also take part in a U.S. holiday like Thanksgiving or Independence Day.
S = Self-Care
Moving is stressful. Take care of your body and mind. Eat well, rest, and find healthy ways to relax. If you feel overwhelmed, talk to someone you trust.
Try this: Take a short walk, call a friend, or do deep breathing for a few minutes.
T = Thriving
Thriving means more than surviving. It means living fully in both cultures. You can be proud of your background and also enjoy your new life. This makes you stronger and happier.
Try this: Share your favorite meal or song from your culture with others, and also enjoy learning something new from them.
Final Thought
The ADJUST™ Method is a practical way to guide newcomers as they learn, grow, and build a new life. It reminds us that moving to a new country does not mean erasing who you are. It means adding new experiences and becoming even more of yourself.
